National Championships 2006
PRESS RELEASE - 2nd October, 2006
FLIPPING BRILLIANT
New Zealand’s largest club became NZ’s best club racking up a record 26 individual artistic titles and 12 trampoline titles at the National Championships last week in Christchurch.
Competing in only 11 grades the 28 CSG artistic gymnasts dominated winning 26 gold, 19 silver and 15 bronze in the largest haul yet.
In 2005 the club achieved 11 titles so this year’s results have been amazing.
The increase has been attributed in part to their new
Head Coach Iosif (Jozsi) Ferencz.
Jozsi was lured out of his planned retirement by Executive Officer Avril Enslow who heard through well respected contacts that he may be available. He took up the position of Male Head Coach in April this year; but has been now elevated to the Head Coach position, not just for the MAG but also for WAG.
“I knew of his international results with the Romanian team and had heard of his successes bringing gymnasts through. His strengths are not only his fantastic technical knowledge but also his ability to extract the best out of each gymnast, and get them to dig deeper.” “I have never known a coach to get such results so quickly and to get so much commitment” she said.
Jozsi was able to add skills quickly as the gymnasts had been well prepared
by the club’s very strong base of excellent professional coaches; they are an International bunch from Russia, Canada, USA and England.
Top performers at the championships, were little
Stacey Anderson (10) a dynamo in WAG Level 5 taking out 4 of the 5 available titles, and the Junior Gymnast of the meet, at her first New Zealand Nationals.
Jordan Russell (11) in level 5 MAG took 4 titles and 2 placings and was runner up MAG Junior Gymnast of the meet.
Kathryn Lewis, (16) last years level 9 outstanding performer stepped up to Level 10 and took 3 titles plus 5 placings, including the open Floor title.
Samantha Russell (17) - 3 out of 5 gold’s in level 9 plus 1 bronze,
Singgya Salim (11) WAG Level 4, - 2 gold and 1 bronze
‘Jorden O’Connell-Inns took 2 gold and 2 placings in MAG level 4 to round out the multiple title holders.
Jozsef Ferencz has the best International CV of any gymnastics coach in New Zealand, having both High Performance Men’s and Women’s qualifications, and having personally coached teams and individuals to World and Olympic medals.
He is looking forward to the next challenge – Commonwealth Games 2010, he has a great club behind him and a willing bunch of gymnasts to work with.
CSG is the largest and best club in NZ, their $1.3m extension will be completed later next month, and they are frankly FLIPPING BRILLIANT.
