VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010

Victorian Championships 11th-14th June

CSG sent over 11 gymnasts to compete in the International Division of the Victorian Championships last weekend. The girls competed well and learnt a lot from this experience. CSG had two teams entered in the competition at IDP 3 and 5, with both achieving placings.

IDP 3

CSG had 6 gymnasts compete in the International Level 3 competition. This was the girls first major competition and they performed very well placing second as a team behind Singapore, but beating all the strong Victorian clubs.

Juliette Ward led the team with beautiful presentation and clean execution to place 5th all around. Juliette performed a great floor routine and vault, and despite a fall on beam did a beautiful routine with the best split jump of the competition. Samantha Williams placed 7th overall with a solid effort on all apparatus, showing great improvement on her beam dismount. Chrystal Mitchell placed 9th overall and performed a fantastic bars routine hitting her kip cast, clear circle and blind change above horizontal, placing second on this apparatus. Chrystal was also the most solid gymnast on beam for the team. Olivia Brett placed 10th overall, performing a beautiful blind change to 45 above on bars, achieving third place on this apparatus. Olivia also performed a good effort on beam and despite some wobbles and a break in connection placed 4th on this apparatus. Olivia was also the only girl to stick her back tuck on floor. April Horton placed 17th overall and Caitlin Davidson placed 19th overall.

Overall the girls performed well and just need to learn how to control their nerves and keep their focus in competition.

IDP 5

CSG had 3 gymnasts compete in the International Level 5 competition. The girls performed well achieving  third team, even though the other teams had 6 gymnasts in the team.

Natasha Boon led the team, placing first all around. Natasha also won the gold medal on vault, bars and floor. Natasha showed great power in her tumbling and vault and some nice control on her bars routine. Millie Williamson placed sixth all around. Millie worked very hard both days to make all her handstands on bars, and was the only gymnast in the competition to be awarded the bonus for a locked out handstand. However Millie was unable to control her body tension and fell. Millie also showed some beautiful performances on floor both days. Tara Purvis placed 10th overall. Tara also placed 2nd = on vault. Tara did well to improve her performance on day 2 by 3 whole marks.

Overall the girls performed well and like IDP 3 need to learn how to maintain their focus on their technique and body tension while competing.

Senior International

CSG had 2 gymnasts compete in the Senior International competition, against some of Australia’s top gymnasts. Because the girls had to continue on to compete in Singapore they only attended Day 1 of the competition and competed admirably.

Holly Moon placed 8th overall, making it all the way through her bar routine with a great fight on her clear circle to handstand. Holly also performed a good floor routine. Lani Hohepa competed three events, it was great to see her performing full routines again. Lani had a very solid front tuck mount on beam and performed her dance beautifully on floor.

Overall CSG competed well in this competition and have gained valuable competitive experience. Theyounger  girls worked very hard for this competition and will now focus on performing well at nationals in September. Well Done Girls !!!

The Senior Internationals were travelling onto Singapore to compete in the Singapore Open. This tour was the start of their build up towards Commonwealth Games.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES DELHI 2010

Holly Moon, Lani Hohepa along with Head Coach Jozsi Ferencz have been named in the NZ Gymnastics Team for the Delhi Games.

Esther Colijn and Avril Enslow have been appointed as judges for this event.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES LONG LISTS ANNOUNCED

GSNZ have named the gymnasts in the CWG long list.

Charlotte White, Holly Moon, Lani Hohepa (all CSG) Briana Mitchell (Harbour) and Jordan Rae (CM) and Dani Greig (UCLA) make up the 6 athletes vying for a place in the team for New Delhi.

Coaches Jozsef Ferencz and Svetlana Sazonova also make the long list.
The first trial to qualify a team was in South Africa in November 2009. The team there made the target team score of 145.00 twice.

Day 1 scoring 145.70 and day 2 improving markedly on uneven bars to set a pleasing 147.25 total.
Qualifying a team looks now like a real possibility.

The next trial is on the weekend of 6th and 7th February, with another opportunity at the Pacific Rim competition in Melbourne late April.
The Commonwealth Games will be held in early October

Male gymnasts also in the mix

Not to be outdone 3 of CSG's senior male gymnasts have also made the list.

Aaron Clutterbuck, Michael Ny and Riku Takei. These gymnast will travel to Auckland in March for their Commonwealth trial, but meanwhile
Aaron, Riku and Jordan Russell  will travel on the 5th February to Auckland along with the girls to trial for the Pacific Rim Team.

PACIFIC RIM TRIALLISTS

Every 2 years the nations around the Pacific Rim get together for a combined gymsport competition.
Men's and Women's artistic, trampoline and rhythmic codes come together for a celebration of the sport in our region, and this year in Melbourne Sports Acro will be added for the first time.
In 2008 the competition was in San Jose and NZ was represented only by a sole judge. This year with the competition in Melbourne the aim is to send 4 teams in Men's and Women's Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline. The competition will not only be a qualifying meet for CWG but also serve as a selection meet for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August.

CSG has 8 gymnasts trialling for the Pacific Rim artistic team. The format is different from normal competitions as the team consists of 6. The team consists of juniors and seniors with a maximum of 3 Seniors. Holly Moon and Lani Hohepa step up into the Senior ranks for the first time to join Charlotte White, Stacey Anderson and Waverely Gee make up the 2 juniors travelling. Aaron Clutterbuck, Riku Takei and Jordan Russell will vy for the places in the MAG team, Jordan is the only junior.

The Gymnasts and coaches have had no summer holidays as they prepare for this great opportunity so close to home. The Pacific Rim has the majority of the world gymnastic powerhouses China, Russia, USA, Japan and AUS are all ranked in the top 6, along with Canada, Mexico, Korea and the like the competition will be at a high level.

We wish the gymnasts and their coaches well.
