Rebecca Morrison leads the field in the All around followed by Charlotte Sullivan.
It was not one of Rebecca's best performances overall, after she fell twice from beam which was the first apparatus. The last apparatus though clinched the title with a medal winning performances from the 3 team members. The bar routine from Rebecca was her best yet hitting her handstands and being rewarded for great form by an only 0.5 deduction from her B score.Final score 16.1 - the only 16 of the level 6 meet. Rebecca plac ed 1st on bars and 1st on floor.

The level 7 boys also competed this morning. CSG's Kyleab Ellis, Jorden O'Connell-Inns and Jordan Russell were named as NZ's team to challenge the Australians'. This was the 2nd time this year that Jordan and Kyleab had a chance to represent NZ. They travelled to the Australian Nationals in July, where Jordan placed 3rd AA, but the team came 2nd.

Holly Moon 15yrs, competing only 3 events due to a shoulder injury, performed well on vault with a 12.850 and 6th place, and 10.95 on floor despite falling out of the floor area on her first tumble pass, tuck double back.

Notes from the gymnasts after the Team competition.

Rebecca Morrison -"I was pleased with my vault, and on Monday I want to be more consistent on beam, and will definitely get my connections on floor"
Rebecca is 1st on vault, 5th on beam.

Analise Borkus - "I was happy with what I did, and on Monday I can do better on floor, I bounced on my last tumble and next time I will stick it.
Analise is currently 1st on bar and beam, 5th on vault and 7th on floor.

Hanna Malloch - "I want to make my kip cast to handstand, I know I can do it. I was pleased with my vault score but want to improve my ranking"
Hanna is currently 2nd on Beam and 3rd on floor, 12th on vault and 4th on bar.

Ari Graham - "I was pleased to finally stick my beam mount in a competition. Vault was good I am 3rd. On Monday I want to make my tumbles and stick". Ari is 3rd on vault, 8th on beam, 13th on floor and 9th on bar.

Shontelle Rogers-Hancox - "I was pleased to stick my flic on beam by myself, and on Monday I will add my clear circle on bars"
Shontelle is 9th on beam, 11th on bars, 15th on vault and floor"

Holly Moon - "I was so pleased to compete my double back, but I went out of the floor area. On Monday I want to stick it. My beam could be better but I stayed on so that was great"

Stacey Anderson - "I was pleased to get the first day over, I went right through my bar but over rotated my dismount so that was a shame. On Monday it will be better.

The coaches (Jozsi and Svetlana) were very pleased with the decision to attend this competition. The competition was always going to be tough, Victoria is a strong gymnastics area, they had 3 women gymnasts in the 6 member Olympic Team. All the Australian gymnasts are peaking for their Nationals in July while NZ nationals is in late September. Australian Gymnasts have come to Melbourne to compete from as far away as QLD, SA and NSW.

The Victorian State Championships is a huge event in a very nice venue, The State Netball Centre. The gymnasts performed very well and were not overawed by their surroundings. They have learned to compete well, this was a big goal for this tour, we are happy with them.

National MAG Squads

National MAG Squads Named- another 3 on the list.

Following on from the WAG squads named late last year, the eagerley awaited MAG squads were named on Tuesday 17th February.
CSG had 3 of their last years Level 6 make it into the National Talent Development squad.

Congratulations to

Kyleab Ellis, Christopher Langridge and Jorden O'Connell-Inns

The celebrations were a little subdued however as 13 year old Jordan Russell found out he was not eligible for the Talent Development squad as he had competed level 7 at the 2008 Nationals. He was also not eligible for the MAG Performance Squad (The senior squad) as he is too young to trial for the Commonwealth 2010 Team.
So here we have a talented gymnast that over the last 4 years was Level 4 and level 5 National Champion, runner up in level 6, and 6th in Level 7 but not recognised by the National Sport Development Committee. An oversight that we hope will be rectified soon.

Another to miss out was Aaron Clutterbuck, a NZ representative in 2007, he competed strongly winning 2 titles (Floor and Vault) at the 2008 National Championships. Aaron also competed at the Australian National Club Championships in Canberra in December where he placed 2nd overall. Check out the results in the 2008 news.

Jordan and Aaron, along with Georgia Catlow (who was unlucky to miss out on the WAG talent squad when she placed 2nd in Level 6) will have a point to prove this year, and I am sure that they will do just that.

Intercontinental Course - Judging WAG, Bratislava

After Mike returned from Sydney, it was Avril's turn to travel to Slovakia for the Intercontinental Women's Judging Course. This course was for the top judges in the World to attend and is the first course for the Women this Olympic Cycle. 104 judges attended the course, 3 from New Zealand. Marie Stechman and Karen Bevins travelled too.
Results - Avril Enslow, maintained her category 1 status, and was placed 6th at the course. A great achievement. This top placing will mean that she will be in the 'pool' for selection to the world's top events.

Karen Bevins was ineligble for category 1, due to lack of international practical competitions, placed 28th within the category 1 range but was given Category 2. Marie Stechman attended the course only and was also awarded category 2.
New Zealand now again has 2 judges at the top of the international lists. Stephen Kendall of Auckland maintained his category 1 place at the Intercontinental MAG course in Germany held in December 2008.

International Course - Judging MAG- Sydney 10th to 14th January

Every 4 years, judges need to validate their international Judging licence (Brevet). The International Technical committees refine the rules to keep our sport trending in the direction they believe is the best for the participants and our worldwide audience. Therefore after the Olympics, courses are held all over the world to educate the judges and coaches ready for the next Olympic cycle.
Mike Plourde attended his first International Brevet course in the Southern Hemisphere when he attended the Men's artistic Gymnastics judging course in Sydney early in January.Mike accompanied, 3 other NZ judges, 2 of whom were taking the test for the first time. Mike received his brevet judging licence in the USA in the last Olympic cycle. The course in the USA had over 90 participants, so the Australasian course with 25 was much friendlier and easier for the lecturers and judges.

CSG now has a fully qualified MAG brevet judge. Congratulations Mike well done.

Flipping Brilliant Clinics. 14 to 16th, and 20th to 24th January.

CSG's January Flipping Brilliant clinics were again over subscribed. Gymnasts and coaches came from as far away as Auckland, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay and Invercargill.

Jozsi and his excellent team of professional coaches led a great learning experience. All the gymnasts came away exhausted but happy. Techniques and progressions were shared
friendships developed and all in all a great start to the gymnastic year.

AYOF - Gymnasts compete at their First international.

Lani Hohepa and Holly Moon competed this week at their first junior International in Sydney.
The competition was tough with a strong Chinese contingent, as well as Japanese, 2 teams of Australians, older British and a mixed age grou of Malaysian gymnasts.
Some of the Japanese competed at the International challenge in Perth in September, and some of the British team competed at the last AYOF. The NZ team was made of of the 2 CSG gymnasts, plus the level 8 NZ title holder Jordyn Rae,  the more experienced 15 year old, Briana Mitchell.
Lani Hohepa was the stand out on day 1 making it through to the Vault finals with a stunning yurchenko layout. She also was first reserve for her favourite evet the floor. After an injury to one of the top Chinese it may be that she may well get to compete in that event too.

Prior to their departure, Erin Baker the famous triathlete came to the gym to watch their last training session and shared some words of wisdom.
