38 Artistic gymnasts and 1 trampolinist.

Melbourne - Victorian State Pennant Finals - 9th August, 2008.

The CSG Junior Development squad (Level 1A and 2A) travelled to Melbourne this week to compete in the Victorian State Pennant Finals.
CSG was invited to send two teams from their junior programmes straight to the final competition without going through the preliminaries. The organisers must have been very surprised by the quality of the work on show from the NZ girls. It has been many years since gymnasts from NZ have kept pace with Australians, after all Australia are one of the world power houses of the sport. They also provided half of the WAG gymnasts into the Australian Olympic team. Melbourne is gymnastically very strong.

The CSG level 1 A team, won not only the team AA competition by 4.0 points but also every apparatus - wow!

The CSG level 2 A team won the AA by 5 whole points, and were  2nd Floor, 5th on Vault, 1st on Bars and Beam.

In December 07 CSG attended the Australian Clubs competition in Canberra with teams in level 4, 5 and 7. these gymnasts, already NZ National title holders held their own. The level 7 team won the Australian overall title, as well as taking the Bars, Beam and Floor apparatus trophy and placing 2nd in the Vault. The level 4 team was 4th from 33 teams, and the level 5 team was 5th. The club learned from this that they were competitive against their Australian peers, and now the juniors have dominated. The future is looking better. A system is in place and is performing well, CSG is looking to the future and is producing and preparing a strong group of gymnasts that are competitive in Australia, that bodes well for the future of the sport.

Well done Joszi and his coaching staff. It takes more than just one person and it takes more than just a few gymnasts, it takes a team, a culture, a programme.

CSG has that, lets look to the future with confidence.

CSG members are finalists in the 2008 Hadlee Awards.

Jozsi Ferencz is once again a finalist in the Sir Richard Hadlee Canterbury Sportsperson coach of the year  awards, and our WAG level 7 team is too.The awards cover the 2007 /8 year and so the stunning results from Nationals 2007 results count.

The level 7 team of

Lani Hohepa, Laura Carpinter, Stacey Anderson, Madison Lafituanai (Canberra), Ashleigh Wade (NZ Nationals) were nominated due to their exceptional performances at the National Championships in September 2007 (the team won, and all were from CSG) and then they went on to dominate at the Australian National clubs competition in December. This group of talented gymnast deserve their recognition. Good luck at the finals.

Kathryn Lewis was also nominated as young sportsperson, but in the build up to 2008 Olympics there were many nominations for this award and Kathryn did not make the fnal cut.
We all know how much Kathryn achieved though and we appreciate the dedication and the effort that went into her 2007 year, and what a year it was.
We appreciate and love it Kathryn. See below.

Kathryn Lewis.

2007 National Level 10 Champion, 2007 Gymnast of the Meet, 2007 Levels Gymnast of the Year. NZ representative 3 times, numerous apparatus titles and AA National, and regional titles to her credit, Kathryn announced her retirement from competitive gymnastics earlier this year.

It was a difficult decision after such a long and successful career, but it was now time for Kathryn to move on.
A presentation was made to Kathryn at the CSG Classic Competition on the weekend, to acknowledge her 12 years as a gymnast with the club.

Kathryn has not left us, she is coaching a junior squad with great success, and hopefully enjoyment.

Primary Schools Competition

Another great Primary Schools Competition was held at CSG. Over 60 competitive gymnasts went through their routines in under 4 hours.
There were some excellent performances and it was great to see our hard working gymnasts have a chance to represent their school in their sport.
Well done everyone, and a huge thank you to the volunteers.

New floor base installed 14th June

Thanks to the Lion Foundation we were able to purchase the base for the AAI Elite Performance Floor. The topper pad an underlay arrived 2 years ago, and today the base was installed. The floor is now complete.

The working bee was very successful with the old floor dismantled and the new floor installed in less than 2.5 hours. Well done everyone.

Junior WAG Coaching Course 6 - 7 June 08

13 coaches from around the South Island attended  an indepth Junior coaching course at CSG. Michele Hawke was the expert presenter and CSG provided level 3 gymnasts as demonstrators. The course was well received by the coaches.

South Island Invitational Competition 31st May - 2 June, 08

The competition ran very smoothly last weekend, with the new competition format and management. This meet has for the last 11 years been run at QEII Park, but usually under the Canterbury Gymnastics Assn umbrella. Now that the regional body has been disbanded CSG is now responsible for this competition and Canterbury Intermediate  & Senior Championships. Olympia will host the Canterbury Junior Champs.

Isabel Goodhew has been retained by CSG as the competition assistant Event Director and Results manager, and at the weekend Dale Todd was the floor manager. Both of these ladies  have a wealth of competition knowledge between them, and teaming up with CSG"s Jane Clark as Event Manager, there was no doubt that it would be successful.
Approx 250 Gymnasts came from around the South Island and Wellington.
This competition saw the return of the junior and sub junior international levels to this area, with 4 gymnasts entered into international 6, Stacey Anderson in international 10, and Holly Moon in Junior International.

The WAG gymnasts from CSG took out every level they competed in - 15 levels.

Christchurch Civic Awards - Adrian Russell

A cluster of community-minded individuals and organisations received framed certificates and boxed medallions from Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker, at the recent Civic Awards ceremony.
The awards recognised twenty two people and organisations from a wide cross-section of the community, whose actions have helped make Christchurch a better place to live.
This year’s recipients cover everything from services to wheelchair rugby, support given to the children and family of prisoners, to services, to the elderly and disadvantaged.

Civic Awards are presented annually by the Council in recognition of substantial service, usually of a voluntary nature that benefits the city of Christchurch and its people. This service can be in a number of areas including recreation, youth activities, social welfare, educational services, cultural, religious and community affairs.

Nominations were called for in August 2007 and went through a judging process. Recommendations on the nominations were then made to a full Council meeting. The process of calling nominations through to the Mayoral function is usually completed within the year of the awards. However due to the local government elections last year, the ceremony had to be postponed and took place on Monday 17 March 2008.

Our very own Adrian Russell was one of the 22. Adrian was nominated for what was achieved under his guidance as President from 2001 to 2007, and as Chair of the Building Committee 2003 to 2007. CSG would not be what it is today without his leadership and vision.

 Congratulations Adrian and thank you.

Beijing Olympics

Guess who has been appointed to the Beijing Olympics as a WAG Judge?
Yes Avril Enslow has received notification of her appointment to Beijing. Congratulations. This will be her 4th Olympics!
Avril will travel to San Jose in March to be at the Pacific Alliance Championships. This is part of her

preparation for Beijing.
Unfortunately there are no NZL gymnasts competing, it is the first year since the Pacific Alliance National Gymnastics Federation competitions began
that no gymnasts will be there.
The Pacific region has many of the worlds gymnastic powerhouses. USA, China, Korea, Canada, Australia and Japan.
