NZ Gymnastics Championships & National Trampoline Championships
Tuesday, 26th September 2006
62 members from Christchurch School of Gymnastics will compete this week at the New Zealand Gymnastics and Trampoline championships to be held at the Westpac Trust Centre from September 27-30.
This is the first time that gymnasts and trampolinists will compete at the same event since 2002. This year for the first time, juniors and senior artistic will compete with the trampoline gymsports to make entries soar to over 700.
QEII the home of Christchurch School of Gymnastics has been increasingly busy this month with the final touches to their long awaited $1.3m extension, as well as the preparation for this years ‘home’ nationals.
The club has many of it’s members appointed to the regional team including:
- Jozsef Ferencz MAG Coach and Senior WAG assistant coach
- Svetlana Sazonova WAG Head Coach
- Hannah Prout WAG assistant coach
- Avril Enslow WAG Control Judge – Senior WAG
- Michele Hawke WAG Control Judge – Junior WAG
- Nigel Humphreys Trampoline sports coach
- Vicki Williams Trampoline sports coach & Judge
- Jane Clark Event Director
- Toby Levine MAG Judge
- Vicki Carpinter Manager Artistic
- Jann Russell Assistant Manager Artistic
- Linda Westerby Manager Trampoline CSG
- Nell Lyttle Asst Manager Trampoline CSG
- Nikki Growcott Judge Trampoline Sports & Tumbling Coach
Our hopefuls for medals include in artistic gymnastics Ashleigh Wade (pictured). She is tipped to come through in the Level 6 WAG event, a runner up to Harbours Amberley Yee last year. Challenging them are 2 gymnasts from her own club; Canterbury Champion Laura Carpinter and fast improving Lani Hohepa.
Level 5 should see Stacey Anderson come out on top after coming through unbeaten this year. Madison Lafituanai constantly 2nd behind her could challenge. In the level 10 event, it will be a fight between CSG”s Kathryn Lewis winner of the NZ Trials earlier in the season, and veteran 22 year old Rachel Clark from Tri Stars.
The MAG team have performed well this season under the expert guidance of Jozsef Ferencz.
Level 9 gymnast Anthony Singh is expected to drastically improve his performances from 2005 , and has been included in the NZ team to compete for the Trans Tasman trophy.
Aaron Clutterbuck level 7 has been adding skills every week and if he can stick them he is sure to take out the title. Jordan Russell the outstanding junior MAG nationals competitor in 2005 with 5 medals, has a hard task in level 5, but should feature in the all around.
Singgya Salim and Justice Shaw-Cross – Level 4, Karla Singh and Michelle Lewis Level 8, Marie van den Broeke Level 7, and Samantha Russell level 9 are all expected to feature in the awards .
There is no Top Club trophy for artistic but if there was one CSG would surely be the favourite.
Several athletes will get the opportunity to represent New Zealand at the championships with Australia sending over teams in trampoline, tumbling and men's artistic gymnastics. These athletes will compete in a Trans Tasman Event. Representative members from Christchurch School of Gymnastics include: Bridget Sugden, Kirsten Wallace, Kimberely Shea, Kieran Growcott, Sam Granger, Corey McNaught and Anthony Singh (MAG level 9).
