Flipping For The World Championships: Kieran Growcott
Sports and travel have always been tied together. Proving yourself at home is all very well and good; taking on the world, however, is a different matter entirely. Fourteen-year old Kieran Growcott is no stranger to representing New Zealand on the world stage. In 2005 Kieran was the silver medalist at the World Age Group Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Now, looking forward to the 2007 World's November, Kieran will endure another very long flight: he will be travelling all the way to Quebec, Canada.
Having athletes make the journey overseas raises awareness of sport in New Zealand. Increasing the level of high performance athletics within the country attracts more qualified coaches, thereby improving coaching standards and bringing the sport to another level. Trampolining has come a long way; Kiwi athletes now have the potential to bring it even further.
Kieran exemplifies the hope that is inherent in young talent which has not yet reached its potential. Unlike gymnasts, trampolinists are known for sticking with their sport well into their twenties. Kieran has years ahead of him; right now, Kieran trains at CSG with Nigel and Vicki Humphreys. Kieran's representative honours include the Trampoline Canterbury Age Group Team, Trampoline Canterbury Elite Team, and Trampoline New Zealand Age Group Team. The 2006-2007 competetive season has seen Kieran continue to excel in both Age Group and Senior Open competitions. Kieran won three NZ Age Group Titles and also took home two Senior Men's Open Titles at the 2006 NZ Trampoline Championships.
Kieran's other interests include Netball, which he plays for the Kereru Under 14s, and Touch Rugby, which he plays for Cashmere High School.
